Let's get started with some geography to set the scene.

Ich fange mal mit geografischen Fakten an und arbeite mich dann langsam vor.

Don't worry. Half a year ago, I couldn't either.

Keine Sorge, das konnte ich auch bis vor einem halben Jahr noch nicht.

Rwanda is the fourth smallest country on the African mainland. It borders four other countries: Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Uganda and Tanzania. Rwanda (pink in the map below) is even smaller than the Netherlands (pink). The 2015 population estimation was 11.2 billion people. The Netherlands had about 17.2 billion people in 2018. But where the Netherlands is flat, Rwanda is hilly. It is sometimes referred to as the "Land of the Thousand Hills", a fact that will for sure train my leg muscles...

Ruanda is das viert kleinste Land auf dem Afrikanischen Kontinent (ohne Inseln). Grenzländer sind die Demokratische Republik Kongo, Burundi, Uganda and Tansania. Rwanda (unten auf der Karte pink) is sogar noch kleiner als Holland (pink). 2015 wurde die Bevölkerung auf 11,2 Millionen geschätzt. Zum Vergleich - Holland hatte 2018 17,2 Millionen. Damit man die beiden Länder nicht verwechselt auf der Karte unten: Ruanda ist das komplette topografische Gegenteil von Holland. Es wird oft "Land der tausend Hügel" genannt. So brauche ich mir wenigstens keine Sorgen um fehlende sportliche Ertüchtigung zu machen...

The capital is Kigali, located right in the middle of the country, with about 1.5 million inhabitants. That's where I'll be spending my next 10 weeks.

Die Hauptstadt ist Kigali, was ich einen außerordentlich schönen Namen finde. Namensbedeutung folgt hoffentlich... Die Stadt liegt genau in der Mitte des Landes und hat ca. 1,5 Millionen Einwohner/innen. Hier verbringe ich die nächsten 10 Wochen.

Ah yes, let's see how good you know your geography. That's where Rwanda is located in Eastern Africa.

Musanze/ Volcano National Park - Ja, genau, Vulkane!

Muraho! (Hello!) Last Friday was another fine day to travel across winding roads to the North. This time however, not to leave the country, but to visit our (Laura's and mine) friend Beth. Eternally thankful for anti-puking pastiles (not the ones Fred and George came up with), because this country is really so mountanous. Consequentually, the roads go up and down. Luckily, the speed limit is 60km/h (Conservative German politicians, look at that!). There were many many road fatalities in Rwanda and thus the government decided to do something about it. Next to the speed limit, they are also educating the population on other measures of road safety, as I read, for example by going to church meetings, to reach a wide number of people (next to usual media outlets of course). Another law: Helmets are mandatory on motorbikes (boda-bodas in Swahili). Me, my helmet and I. I am getting more adventurous with taking photos on the boda-boda for sure. Umuganda

Every last Saturday of the month is "helping each other day" - Umuganda. Jeden letzten Samstag im Monat ist "anderen helfen Tag" - Umuganda. Many people were also standing around us to socialize and look at Laura's and my feeble efforts to hack away weeds. Laura, my classmate, and I went with Muhaya, my landlord to a spot a short way away from my place, and weeded a little part of a road. There were already some people at work and some sort of village elder was there to oversee the work. The spot for cleaning is also picked by the village elders (city district). Cleaning starts at 9am and goes on till the site is finished or about 11am. Helping the community out was very nice though, and everyone was very interested to see the Muzungus (white people) helping. We were definitely subject of many photos. The work was very tiring though, and I don't think we really helped a lot. But maybe the gesture was already enough... Laura, meine Kommolit...

MINIFRA

Had a meeting at the Ministry of Infrastructure this morning. Security is very tight at all the government buildings, but the amount of people with machine guns is rather frightening to someone who never sees one up close usually. Heute morgen war ich im Infrastrukturministerium für ein Meeting. So viele Sicherheitsvorkehrungen, sprich Maschinengewehre sieht man als Deutsche wirklich nie. Zum Glück bleiben die mir fern, so gefährlich sehe ich wohl nicht aus. The meeting was very informative and everyone so helpful and accommodating. It's research heaven really. Das Treffen war super informativ und ich bin sehr glücklich wie hilfreich alle sind. Ich bin sozusagen im Forschungshimmel. Most interesting observation: The ministry of infrastructure has the most interesting installation of electrical outputs. Rather than being on the walls or the ceiling, they run in rows straight across the floor. A real big tripping hazard for people stumbling through life like ...
